Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers – Workshop on Climate Change

NEWS RELEASE

March 30, 2001

FREDERICTON (NB) – The Conference of the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premier’s (NEG-ECP) Workshop on Climate Change concluded in Fredericton today.  Co-hosted by the Province of New Brunswick and the Premier’s Round Table on Environment and Economy, the event provided an opportunity for delegates to share ideas and examine the causes and effects of climate change on the region.

About 250 people attended the workshop on March 28-30.  Two university students opened the workshop on Wednesday night by issuing a challenge to the delegates.  Jonathan Sheppard of Mount Allison University and Gabrielle Dreyfus of Harvard University stressed the importance and urgency of taking substantive measures to meet the climate change challenge.

Participating delegates heard from a number of speakers who led discussions and shared valuable information on climate change including impacts and risks, economic and policy measures, adaptation of infrastructure, maintaining valued environments, technology opportunities, regulatory instruments and adaptation of resource industries.

The premiers and governors at their annual meeting last year initiated the workshop on climate change through a resolution that resolved that global warming, given its harmful consequences to the environment and the economy, is a joint concern for which a regional approach to strategic action is required.  The objective of the workshop was to examine climate change issues and to develop ideas and options for consideration in the development of a proposal action plan for presentation to the 2001 annual meeting of the NEG-ECP.

The next meeting of the NEG-ECP is scheduled for August in Connecticut.
