LONDON, ON - August 15, 2001 -- At today's meeting of Provincial and Territorial Ministers responsible for Housing, Ministers confirmed their strong consensus on the need for flexibility in any new federal spending program. Ministers also shared information on how their jurisdictions are addressing the diverse housing challenges in all parts of Canada.
Ministers welcomed federal government funding for affordable housing initiatives, but reiterated that any new spending must support provincial and territorial priorities and recognize their existing spending.
Ministers expressed concern that the program, as currently proposed, will not meet the needs of Canadians for affordable and adequate housing. The parameters of the program do not allow provinces and territories to serve those most in need. Ministers noted that several organizations, including the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, have raised similar concerns.
"We need flexibility to design programs that work in each jurisdiction and in diverse communities. A program that doesn't work for all jurisdictions is not acceptable to provinces and territories," said Chris Hodgson, Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, who chaired today's meeting. "All provincial and territorial ministers are united in their commitment to flexible housing programs that address diverse housing needs from coast to coast to coast."
Ministers also emphasized the need to have long-term strategies to improve the business climate for affordable housing in urban areas and to address the unique needs of rural and remote areas.
"We are looking forward to talking to the federal Minister tomorrow on these urgent matters," said Minister Hodgson.
Manitoba will be pleased to host the next meeting of Provincial and Territorial Ministers responsible for housing in 2002.
