NEWS RELEASE – FISHERIES MINISTERS SUPPORT NEWLY-LAUNCHED LOBSTER COUNCIL OF CANADA

October 15, 2009

Mill River, PEI – Ministers of fisheries and aquaculture from Canada’s eastern provinces and the federal government today applauded the creation of the Lobster Council of Canada, a marketing and promotional body for Atlantic Canada’s signature seafood.

“Canada’s lobster industry produces some of the world’s finest and most sustainable seafood. The Lobster Council of Canada will play a crucial role in ensuring that this message is heard loud and clear,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. “Developing a strong and recognizable brand for our lobster is a key component for the economic prosperity of this important Canadian fishery.”

The Lobster Council of Canada will play a key role in maintaining and developing market access for Atlantic lobster and supporting innovation in product development. The Government of Canada is working closely with the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and key stakeholders on a strategy for the long-term sustainability of the lobster industry. The federal and provincial governments are collaborating to fund the Council during its first two years.

“On behalf of all Eastern Canadian Fisheries Ministers, I am pleased that industry has recognized the need to establish the Council. Collaboration and co-operation with all lobster industry sectors is the key to ensuring the sustainability of the resource and success of the Canadian Lobster Industry,” said the Honourable Neil LeClair, PEI Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development.

The Council’s steering committee includes harvesters, processors, and union representatives.  Governments of the four Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Canada agreed to collectively provide approximately $370,000 in direct funding to the Council over the next two years.

The industry employs about 30,000 Canadians, while lobster exports generate more than $1 billion worth of revenue each year.
