October 23, 2020 - Ottawa, Ontario - Department of Finance Canada
Today, the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, held her fourth biweekly teleconference with provincial and territorial Finance Ministers.
Building on previous meetings, the Deputy Prime Minister reiterated the government's commitment to supporting Canadians and Canadian businesses. She stressed that an effective health response is the best economic policy and the importance of following public health guidance as we continue to navigate the second wave of this pandemic. Additionally, she touched on new measures to support businesses facing challenges from necessary public health orders, such as the new proposed Canada Emergency Rent subsidy and the expansion of the Canada Emergency Business Account. The Deputy Prime Minister recognized the remarkable resilience and innovation with which Canadian businesses are currently facing the pandemic.
Finally, the Deputy Prime Minister updated her colleagues on the outcomes of last week's 2020 International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings, during which Canada and other countries highlighted the need to continue providing financial support, and the risks if support is prematurely withdrawn.
