2006 Western Premiers’ Conference

NEWS RELEASE – ADDICTIONS – CRYSTAL METH

Gimli – May 30, 2006 -- In Lloydminster in 2005, Western Premiers committed to accelerate action to address crystal meth and other addictions. Very real progress has been made, including increased and more effective treatment options, heightened enforcement and new controls on the sale of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. As well, federal penalties for methamphetamine offences have been increased.

Building on the momentum of the Ministerial conference hosted by Saskatchewan in June 2005, Western Premiers are encouraged by the growing attention to this issue on the national stage and note that the Council of the Federation will be considering details for a national awareness campaign at its upcoming summer meeting. Premiers are continuing to work together to share best practices.

In addition, Western Premiers agreed to establish an awards program to recognize exceptional leadership in responding at the community level to crystal meth and other addictions. This will be developed by responsible Ministers for launch this fall.
