Meeting of Premiers on the Council of the Federation

NEWS RELEASE – PREMIERS LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT MEETING WITH PAUL MARTIN

Charlottetown – December 5, 2003 – As Paul Martin prepares to take office as Prime Minister, Premiers reaffirm their intention to work with him to address the issues that matter to Canadians. Premiers were pleased to hear that Mr. Martin shares their commitment to health care when he said recently, “We can never forget that our health care system is one made blind to income so that its eyes can be fixed on need. Make no mistake, I will keep the promise of universal and high quality health care.”

Building on Mr. Martin’s commitment, Premiers look forward to a First Ministers’ Meeting early in the new year in advance of the 2004 federal budget. Premiers are of the view that pressing issues, notably health care sustainability, require the early attention of all First Ministers.
